Visa Entry & Requirements

Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)

Starting May 1, 2025, all non-Thai nationals entering Thailand—whether by air, land, or sea—are required to complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online prior to arrival. This digital form replaces the traditional paper-based TM6 arrival card and is mandatory for tourists, business travelers, and long-term residents alike.

Who Must Complete the TDAC

All foreign travelers must submit the TDAC, regardless of visa status. This includes those entering under visa exemption, visa on arrival, or with any type of Thai visa. The only exceptions are:

  • Travelers transiting through Thailand without passing through immigration control.

  • Individuals entering using a Border Pass.

When to Submit
You should complete the TDAC within 72 hours (3 days) before your scheduled arrival in Thailand. For instance, if you’re arriving on June 16, you can submit the form as early as June 13. While it’s possible to complete the TDAC upon arrival using airport kiosks or your mobile device, it’s strongly recommended to do so in advance to avoid potential delays.

How to Submit

  • Visit the official TDAC portal: https://tdac.immigration.go.th.

  • Click on “Arrival Card” and fill in the required information.

  • Review your entries carefully before submission.

After submission, save or print the confirmation QR code, which you’ll need to present to immigration officers upon arrival.

The TDAC is free of charge when submitted through the office website.

Note: While the TDAC is not a visa, it is a mandatory pre-arrival requirement. Ensure you also meet any visa requirements applicable to your nationality.

American and Canadian tourists can enter Thailand without a visa for up to 30 days when arriving by air or land. To qualify, travelers must hold a valid passport with at least six months of validity and present proof of onward travel. For longer stays or other purposes like work or study, a visa must be obtained in advance from a Thai embassy or consulate. Always check current regulations before travel, as policies may change.

A one-time 30-day extension is possible by applying at an immigration office in Thailand (fee applies).

If you plan to stay longer than 30 days, you can apply for a Tourist Visa (TR) from a Thai embassy or consulate before your trip. This usually allows a 60-day stay and can also be extended for 30 days.

key travel tips

Shortest routes

West Coast cities (e.g., Los Angeles or San Francisco) generally have shorter total travel times than East Coast cities

Time Difference

Thailand is 12 hours ahead of New York (Eastern Time) and 15 hours ahead of Los Angeles (Pacific Time), which can make flights feel longer due to the time zone shift.

Layover Durations

Layover durations can significantly affect travel time, so choosing shorter layovers in well-connected airports can reduce total travel hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa to visit Thailand?

The best time to visit is during the cool and dry season from November to February, when the weather is pleasant across most of the country.  Thailand’s green season (June-October) has smaller crowds and still lush landscapes.

The official currency is the Thai Baht (THB).  Vistors can exchange money or withdraw Baht from ATMs. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels and upscale restaurants. You can now sign up for the tourist e-wallet and digital send money to vendors.

Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated, especially in the service industry. A small tip of 20–100 THB for good service is customary in restaurants and hotels.

For temples and sacred sites, a strict dress code applies:

  • Shoulders and knees must be covered for both men and women.

  • Avoid sleeveless tops, shorts, or ripped clothing.

  • Remove hats and shoes before entering temple buildings.

  • Long skirts, pants, or sarongs are recommended.

Many major temples offer rental or loaner clothing if you’re not dressed appropriately. Dressing respectfully shows cultural awareness and is key to a positive travel experience.

The official language of Thailand is Thai, which is spoken throughout the country. While English is not widely spoken in rural areas, it is commonly understood in major tourist destinations like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and resort areas. Hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and shops catering to tourists often have English-speaking staff. Street vendors and taxi drivers may know basic English, but not fluently—so it’s helpful to learn a few simple Thai phrases or use a translation app to bridge the gap and enhance your experience.

While Uber can be used, Grab is the most popular and widely used ride-hailing app in Thailand. It operates in major cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Pattaya, offering services such as car rides, motorbike taxis, food delivery, and even grocery delivery. Grab is a convenient and often safer alternative to negotiating fares with traditional taxis or tuk-tuks. You can pay through the app using a credit card or cash. While other apps like Bolt and inDrive are emerging in some areas, Grab remains the most reliable for tourist.

Getting a SIM card in Thailand is easy and affordable. You can purchase a prepaid tourist SIM card at major airports (like Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang), convenience stores (7-Eleven, Family Mart), or mobile provider shops (AIS, DTAC, TrueMove). Most tourist SIMs include high-speed data, local calls, and international calling options, valid for 7 to 30 days.

To activate, you’ll need to show your passport. Plans typically cost $5–$20 USD, depending on the data package. Thailand also has strong mobile coverage and widespread 4G/5G service, making it easy to stay connected throughout your trip.

If your phone supports eSIM, you can easily purchase mobile data for Thailand from several reputable providers online.
