The Tourism Authority of Thailand Featured in New Episode to Showcase the Distinctive Craftsmanship and Detail in Thai Fashion
NEW YORK – March 14, 2019 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand is a proud participant of last night’s episode of Project Runway All Stars. The episode, titled “Nina Says Don’t Cry Over Spilt Silk,” featured guest judge Nina Garcia sharing her experience from her trip to Thailand with the competing designers and hosting this week’s challenge.
The designers were given one day to create a gown fit for a Royal Ball using luxurious silk, a material that is traditionally made in Thailand. Designer Irina Shabayeva, who created a stunning modern take on a ball gown was this week’s challenge winner. She will be jetting off to Thailand to discover the beauty of the destination in partnership with the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
“I have always been inspired by people and places. You can unlock creativity by seeing the world and seeing the world through the lens of different cultures. I wanted to bring the designers on the road to discovery; and for the fashion seeker, Thailand, a country filled with artisans, is an amazing place to explore,” said Garcia. “The beautiful prints, rich silks and hand weaving and dyeing techniques naturally lend themselves to detailed, precise creations, that are original from start to finish. How can you not be inspired?”
Thailand is home to outstanding quality textiles where travelers and fashionistas can explore the art of Thai fabric in each of the four regions from Chiang Mai’s Pha Sin Teen Jok in the North for it’s original Lanna patterns, Ayutthaya’s Yok Thong in Central region for luxurious gold silk fabrics, Pha Yok Mueang Nakhon in the South for exotic gold and silver threads, to Khon Kaen’s Mudmee Silk in Isaan region for the finest tie-dyed silk. Here, local artisans continue to create handwoven and hand-dyed fabrics that require intricate skill and attention to detail to grow, harvest, dye, weave and lace. The natural colors of the fabrics come from fruits, shells, roots, leaves and mud to create each textile. The result is a beautiful garment with different pattern designs ensuring that each piece is one-of-a-kind.
“Thai fabric reflects our Thai lifestyle from streetwear to traditional royal ceremonies and we hope that through sharing the story of Thai silk and fashion with Project Runway viewers, travelers will be encouraged to learn more and go straight to the sources on their next trip to Thailand: the weaving villages throughout the countryside,” said Charinya Kiatlapnachai, director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s New York office.
